Hands to The Sky - The Single

About The Film

As an exploration into outdoor house music parties, Hands to the Sky is a brilliant documentary that delves deep into the world of summertime dance jams. From the sweaty bodies on the dance floor to the hardworking promoters behind the scenes to the DJs spinning music, director Angelo Boyke and co-director JP Noel, take the viewers on a journey into sound and vision that is as exciting for house music aficionados as it is for newcomers to the scene.

"With this film we're trying to pass on the history and vibe of old school downtown dance culture while also showing how the scene has progressed," says producer Domingo Canate. As a fan and participant of the culture since the golden years of classic clubs the Loft and the Paradise Garage, Canate was inspired by the love and energy he witnessed at various events throughout the city.

Putting together a production team of friends and family that shared his passion, Hands to the Sky was shot on video over a two-year period at various parties in Coney Island, Fort Green Park and Harlem.

Alongside associate producers Wendy Arimah and Kervyn Mark, the team interviewed scene DJ veterans Ray Vasquez, Lou Gorbea, Kervyn Mark and others. With a scorching score by veteran musician Erik Talbert, the camera becomes one with the crowd as it follows the hyperkinetic steps of the dancers lost in the rhythm of the moment.

While Hands to the Sky is the first documentary made by Canate and his filmmaking collective, there is nothing amateur about the production. "We had a vision in our minds and have tried very hard to translate that into a cinematic experience," Canate continues. "I've been going to these outdoor parties for ten years and there is such a sense of community at these events. I wanted to capture that spirit on film for the world to see." Due to be released in the summer of 2012, just in time for the next season of outdoor dance parties, Hands to Sky will be shown at film festivals and events across the world."
